This morning is all about the Macy's parade for me.

I went to the Macy's parade for the first time when I was 3. It was just me and Daddy. Mom stayed home with my sister. I had a perfect perch riding on Daddy's shoulders. I do not remember it but we have pictures and I heard the story a bazillion times.

My next personal visit to the Macy's parade was my first year in college. My parents had moved back to NYC and lived in mid-town Manhattan. My brother and sister and I were all home from school. Again just me and Daddy. No one else was interested. That first year we started a tradition-ette. Daddy and I headed out for the parade. We had a special spot that Daddy had scouted out near Central Park.

We loved every bit. The floats, the balloons but most the bands. We loved the bands. Daddy was a good scout cause our spot was never crowded and we made friends with the cops working the area. It was just great fun.

Apres parade was the Bloody Mary Taste Test. We'd walk home and stop at two places - the first two places varied every year - and get bloody marys. Then we'd land at PJ Clarke's which was near the apartment and had The Very Best Bloody Marys in the whole entire world.

And then we would stagger home for turkey.

We did this for four years. The year I graduated from college, Mom and Dad moved from NYC and I never got to the Macy's parade again. But until 1999, I watched it on TV every year. In 1999, Daddy died and I started spending Thanksgivings with Mom.

Mom really did not like parades or magicians. I inherited the magician thing but I got my parade DNA from Daddy.

So this year... I'm watching the Macy's parade. TiVo is going to record it for me and I'm going to give it about a 45 minute head start so I can fast forward through the commercials and then I'm going to wallow in the paradedness of it all.

Nice.
