I had actually not given any thought to New Year or New Year's Eve until I read my LJ friends page.  I still haven't given it much thought.  It just doesn't do it for me.  It's not that I'm not a marker of passages... For instance, I am - and always have been - a devoted watcher of my car's odometer.  Nothing tickles me more than turning some significant number - doesn't even have to be that significant.  But watching a year count down or start up?  Nah.

However, it did occur to me that this might be a good day for shopping.  So I hopped in the car early and headed out for Target.

I know where you weren't.  You were not on any Seattle highway and neither was anyone else.  A few weeks ago it took me just under an hour and a half to travel from my house to where [livejournal.com profile] machupicchu works.  Today it took me 6 minutes.

There was no one in the Target parking lot.  The only people in the Target store had red shirts on and the nametags of 'sales associates'.  Interestingly, however, their 'help the customer' incentive was also missing.  And... they had no inventory.  So I wen to KMart where I picked up some bowls (Martha Stewart) that I've been wanting to get before they quit carrying them or the store goes under for good or both.  And, I picked up a couple of other odd things but mainly just enjoyed wandering around.

On the way home I stopped at IHOP!  Yep.  I love IHOP.  The closet one to me is tiny and nearly always packed and today was no exception.  But the wait was not too long and the eavesdropping was fun and the wait staff was amazing!  My waitress was chipper and friendly and nice and efficient.  The waiter for the station next to me, twice asked me if I needed anything and even the bus boy was friendly.  I so over tipped.  It was a fun little stop.

I love Google's SMS

I pay $16 a month extra on my cellphone bill.  $6 for insurance and $10 for unlimited data.  On the Treo, that unlimited data was email and web and whatever else I wanted.  On my tiny phone, unless I can get it going as a modem, I really don't need unlimited data.  So I'm thinking about dropping both.

But, today I used a feature that I love and realized that when I drop the unlimited data I'm not going to be able to use it... And that's Google SMS.  You send a text message to 466543 and it sends you back the 411.  I couldn't remember if KMart was above 102nd Street or below so I pulled over and sent 'kmart 98104' and within seconds got the address (it's above 102nd).  Then coming home, I got the IHOP idea and wondered if there was one closer to where I was so this time I sent 'IHOP98401' and got a list of all the IHOPs.  (98401 is my zip code - it's easier than punching in Seattle).  It's such a handy feature.  I think maybe Sprint has a pay as you go data feature that would work ok for this, though.  I'll see.

Now I think I'll maybe watch a bit of TV.
