Well, my technical hangnail is somewhat. I can dial up a connection after all. Not with the cellphone yet, but at least with a land line.
I've had this great little ISP now for more than a decade. http://www.drizzle.com It was owned by a woman and staffed by the greatest ISP team on earth. A couple of years ago they were bought out - in stealth mode. They never said a word. Just changed a few things here and there - like all of a sudden you could pay with Discover and their billing invoices changed. But, all else was the same...
Then last week I had occasion to call them twice. Their support hours have always been limited - pretty much 8-5 Monday - Friday but generally you could get through on the phone during those times. Well, not any more. Now a nice receptionist answers the phone and tells you all the technical people are busy and can they call me back? Er. No. I tried asking to hold once and it was clear that was not her first choice - after 5 minutes she came back on the line and asked if I wanted to still hold. Finally I asked that they call me. I'm still waiting to hear.
I did send emails - two of them. One asking that they forward my email to a different address. That was on Thursday morning. I have never heard a word and no address forwarding has taken place.
On Friday I sent an email asking about the dial up thing. I did get a response to that. I don't have dial up privileges any more.
I'm paying top dollar (I believe) for their services and while I rarely need them for anything, when I do, I do want to be able to get them. I'm not so happy about this and I'm not sure what to do about it, if anything. My work uses http://www.seanet.com and the couple of times I had to use them for customer support they were great. Maybe I should give them a call and see if they are interested in my business. I paid my ISP last November for a year and I'll betcha they will not give me a refund.

On a happier note...
We have having a little mini- windstorm here today... The Tree That I Hate is really getting blown around. I know it won't fall over but I can always hope. It's tall and spindly. If might hurt a car if it fell on it but I'm ok with that. It probably wouldn't fall that way anyway.
When I was out yesterday I saw a couple of huge fucking trees that got themselves felled during the windstorm of a couple of weeks ago. One is just up the road from here - less than a mile. They have topped it but so far have left the trunk where it fell. So the tree is on it's side and the base of it - the diameter of the ground part of the trunk is at least 8 feet tall. It fell away from the apartment it was next to onto the street. Had it fallen the other way, it would have taken out at least 4 garden apartments. Scary stuff.

Ok so that wasn't such a happier note... hmmm
Work will pick back up here in a couple of hours. Jean - my main project manager - isn't a morning person. It takes her a while to kick in. She'll be sending stuff along shortly.
And so we start 2007.
