Riddle me this.  How does a computer know when it's about to be replaced?  Is there a forum somewhere that it reads or or is it getting dna off the mouse?  How does it know?

In this case it's really just the operating system.  On this desktop.  Of course, it probably read the headlines about Vista and knows that I can't go too long without the latest and greatest.

First we have the whole AVG anti-virus thing.  Along the way, at some point, it quit logging me on automatically.  So after I got the AVG/Avast thing fixed, I decided to fix that.  The first two things (tweak_iu and userpasswords2 did not work) so I tried a third which pretty much wiped out my access to my account (the admin account - how scary is that??)

Time for a rollback.  WTF?  What happened to my automatic restore points???? I only have two restore points in the whole freaking thing and both of them are from last Tuesday.

So I restore to last Tuesday.  I should have uninstalled Avast and then restored but I didn't.  After many attempts to uninstall, repair and/or reinstall AVG, I'm hosed.  It won't run, and so I can't uninstall it and so I can't reinstall Avast.  At one point I thought I had actually lost all of my Outlook mail and settings.  Fuckety fuck.

On the up side, it did remind me that this would be a good time to copy over all of the content of my partitions on this harddrive to one of my external harddrives.  Am doing that now.  Most of it, of course, is probably trash but at least it will be safe trash.  And I've also got Carbonite going so nothing is fatal but still.

I'm getting ready to put the pressure on the bro to get my new computer up and running and here.
