I'm taking the rest of the night off

I think the current Vista problem is a corrupt pagefile.sys. I can bypass it (and I'm not at all sure what that does) on reboot and the machine snaps to life in under 2 mins. 

I've got several queries out looking for an answer. 

The system itself is quite perky right now so I'm going to let it rest and think about things. 

And I'm going to watch some TV - I haven't even seen CBS Sunday Morning yet!
