So my brother takes Mom out to buy her a new TV for the den. She's needed one for a long time. The one she had was a piece of junk. The new purchase has to be light enough for her to lift and big enough for her to see the screen. They found a nice Daewoo at Target.

He just seems to have skipped the part where he shows her how to operate it. So now, apparently, she has clicked on some menu item which makes half the screen black. I've told him a million times not to assume she understands anything. The last time I bought her a new TV for the bedroom, I put red nail polish on the remote buttons that she was not to touch. I should her what happened if she did touch them and marked the manual with the pages she would need to get herself out of trouble. So far so good. but apparently that knowledge is in the bedroom and can't make it to the den.

I just got a note from her that she has read the manual and is going to call Target or Daewoo. Lord help us all. She has a TV repair guy she can call. He will charge her $50 and I told her that she should just pay it. What good is a new TV if you can't watch it and she's got $50. (I told her to take it out of my brother's third of the inheritance.)

My brother sent her a very helpful email saying 'it was working when I left so you must have done something.'

I am not going to worry about this. I am not.

Can you fix her up with an LJ, but maybe she's already got one!

I love your mom's technological aspirations, but whenever she gets a new gizmo, I can feel your blood pressure rising from 18 states away.

Ha ha ha...can't help it, I'm giggling and snickering.

(not at You)

At me, really. And only because I've been through the same thing with my littl3 93 year old neighbor next door. She calls her son up in Bakersfield to ask him what to do. He gets annoyed, she gets flustered. Sometimes she'll just use the other TV (2 feet away) in the dining room, and casually mention it to me.

I go over, and sure enough...she's been punching the remote buttons in the dark. (it glows in the dark too)

She'll hit the wrong one initially, and then hit every other one there is.

I un-mute, or re-program, and get the same reply, "oh, I have to remember NOT to touch that one"

And I don't get the $ 50 service call fee!

I think your brother's response is a strong candidate for this year's "true, but not helpful" trophy.

Sounds like she's been playing with the closed captioning, that can leave a black box on the screen. (My years helping old people out with their satellite TV pay off!)

So funny, but no TV is a big deal sometimes.
