angelamermaid has saved the day!!! In her comment to my Mom's latest technical glitz yesterday she said

"Sounds like she's been playing with the closed captioning, that can leave a black box on the screen. (My years helping old people out with their satellite TV pay off!)"

So last night, in desperation, I sent her a note "My friend who works with TV users says maybe you might have turned on the closed captioning thing. Maybe, in the book, there's a thing about turning it off and on? Just a thought" (She had already said she was not going to ever touch it except to throw it out the window.)

This morning I wake up to find this email (complete with caps and graphic):

GET UP GET UP GET UP. The new TV is fixed thanks to your friend.

You totally did! You were able to cut through the crap and nail the one likely possibility and enabled her to go right to the right place in the book and figure it out on her own.

And, not only is her TV fixed, but she fixed it. She's so excited. My brother says he got two email about it this morning (probably one was neener neener neener...)

As a family... we are in your debt. And, I would also like to say that I am very impressed that you knew how to spell verklempt. (If it were me, I'd still be looking for a good synonym!)

I love your stories about your mom, I'm glad I was able to help. I don't do much troubleshooting with customers as a supervisor, but when I was a CSR I spent a lot of time on the phone with older customers dealing with blue screens, remote controls, and the dreaded black box.

Actually one of the reasons I went into the collections department was that I was tired of people not knowing how to use their remote controls!

I get a kick out of your mother's dramas and delemmas. I miss my mom but I can remember how frustrating it can be and also how amusing. My mother wouldn't use a ATM machine so your mom is high tech in comparison. *L*
