Where were you when.... The Beatles were first on Ed Sullivan? Ok, so lots of you weren't born yet, but I was. And the anticipation of the big event was monumental. I made a new dress for the occasion. A pink shift. (I am not making this up.) My small group of girlfriends all went to Missy Davis' house to watch the show. Everyone dressed up to watch the TV show. I was not the only one who had a new dress. (Seriously, I am not making this up.) I do remember actually seeing the show but being allowed to go out and to watch TV on a school night are more vivid parts of the memory than anything else. I don't remember that ever happening again.

It's raining - the Blue Jay poncho is going to have to be hauled out for today's walk. But, it's also still pretty dark. Light enough to walk really, but too dark to get good pics should I happen upon a good pic.

Then it will be in to work. I got a note last night from my manger asking me to do one final task - it will take me about an hour or so. Then it's clean off the computer and turn in my card key, pick up my check and I officially start down the hallway to the next adventure. I'm a little more enthusiastic about getting laid off than I probably should be. Last time I got laid off I was frantic that I'd be a bag lady. This time, I'm grateful that I am forced to try something new and have the unemployment benefits to ease the way.

You know I think a lot of us feel that way about getting laid off. The threat has hung over our heads for so long it is almost a relief. I think it will change the job market to some extent. Employers are going to have to treat people better because we all are less likely to we willing to put up with a bunch of crap.

Well, another door is opening for you in your life. Go through it with your head high, with excited anticipation of the new adventures to come.

The Beatles?? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was a freshman in high school in a little town called Arcata, California. North coast, nestled in the redwood trees. I adored the Beatles. My father (the dictator in the family) disapproved. "Those bums need haircuts!" he declared. He had a crewcut. As I recall, we only received one channel with a rooftop antenna, and so we watched the Ed Sullivan show. My dad grudgingly allowed me and my two older sisters to watch. I nearly swooned with delight, but I had to hide it so my dad wouldn't turn off the t.v.!

I could say something deep and Hallmarky like "today is the first day of the rest of your life". Instead I'll just say happy leaving day and good luck with whatever the future brings.

Now get the hell out of there . .

That's great. A new dress to go watch the Beatles on TV. Says a lot about what a big event it was. What a fantastic detail to file in my box of "stuff that happened during my first year of life." :-)

I was around 5 or 6 years old and I remember watching the show. I also had the coolest Beatle's wig...loved it!

As for the job ending...I really believe that doors open and close for reasons. When my freelance film career started to wane and finally dropped off to the point where I couldn't sustain, I wasn't a happy camper but I now realize that I am happier with my own business and I still love what I do....even if it's in a totally different field.

On to better horizons!
