If you've read my journal for any time, you are probably well aware of my inability to wait for much of anything. So, after my last entry (and the very helpful comments), I did some online research and then got into the car.
Before I left, I studied my cellphone usage for the last 6 months. One month I used 8 minutes. One month I used 84. The rest were between 15-30 minutes. Clearly, paying $39 a month was silly. (When Mom was alive and while I was doing her estate stuff, I was running 300 minutes a month but now I really only use it once in a while.)
I called Sprint to find out dates and details of unhooking. I asked for billing and was told that the wait time was 10-15 minutes. I held for a while and then had a DUH. I hung up and called back and asked for 'cancel my account'. I heard the connection ring immediately. I was still laughing when Heather came on the line to help me. I was a dud in her book. I already had the cheapest plan and at a discount. And she had nothing she could offer me. She was very nice. I got the info from her.
Radio Shack had Cingular and Virgin. Both of these have expiring minutes and expensive minimum purchases. And neither had an entry phone for under $25. On to Target. Tracfone. $15. This is a price point that enables me to investigate. Worst that can happen is I blow $15. I'm ok with that.
It's a snickers size phone and doesn't do anything I don't need it to and I can see the screen without my glasses. If the service is good and I'm happy with it, and I want a fancier phone, they have a good selection. One thing that was impressive is that the little thing had enough battery life out of the box to turn it on and get some info and play a little. Nice. It's charging now.
I filled out the form to port my number. If that works, great. If not, I can live with a new one if I have to. The instructions are pretty straightforward. I have a Case ID and in about once my old phone stops working, I can activate this one. Cool. And excellent.
Thanks,
canuckgirl, for a great idea! This has been bugging me for a while. This is a great solution.
