susandennisIn a galaxy far way long long ago, I hung with the newspaper crowd from the Charlotte Observer. We were a tight bunch. My husband was a staff writer. My friend who introduced us was a columnist. One of those in the group was the cartoonist, Doug Marlette.
He was killed today in a car wreck. I heard the news on NPR. When I got home, I looked him up. He sure looks old in his pictures. I haven't seen him (or anyone else from the 'O') in about 100 years. It turns out he was a year younger than I am. People my age and younger need to not look old. Seriously.
He wrote a comic strip called Kudzu and has for a long time. They even made a Broadway play out it several years ago. The local NPR announcer today made a passing remark after story wondering out loud what Kudzu stood for. I never thought about it before but why in the heck would anyone out here know what kudzu even is? Wonder if they know what Spanish moss is? When we were kids we used to call Spanish moss, Herman. I have no earthly idea why.
I lived in a little cottage in Aiken, South Carolina one time. It had a stone patio and kudzu grew out of the stone. I bought a patio chair one day and the next day noticed kudzu peeking out next to where the front chair leg was. I decided to see really how fast it grew. I watched it every day. I was never actually able to see movement, that sucker had wound itself around the leg and reached the seat in 4 days. I sweartogod.
Regardless, Doug needed to look younger in his pictures.
