I'm not sure I needed this extra step but it was easy enough and doesn't hurt. I got three slats (about the width and thickness of a yard stick) and had them cut to go from the floor to about one inch shy of the top of the foam. $3.82 total.

I just slid them in between the fabric and the foam, got Betty to a little QA...

Then I slipped the slats in between the wall and the bed. When I need to change the sheets, I can just lift up the foam a bit and then plop it right down again - like so...

When I plop it down, it looks just like it did before the slats.

The impetus for the headboard was not really looks. I read in bed every night for about an hour and then in the mornings, I'm back at it with my coffee and the newspaper. All the pillows were just becoming a bitch to manage and my back and shoulders were getting sore. In only two nights of the new headboard and one pillow, my back and shoulders feel 100% better! Success. And it looks better, to boot. I'm proud.

How clever you are!
And that green goes so nicely with your colorful patchwork cover.

Very nice job.
