My war of northern aggression
Jun. 22nd, 2008 12:39 pmThe Mariners are playing in Atlanta (and while we did humiliate them in the first game, they have handily redeemed themselves in the other two games). Since the baseball sucks, I'm focused otherwise.
In the early 80's the Braves sucked at baseball - they might have been worse than the Mariners (but probably not)BUT every one of their games was on TV. I lived in North Carolina which was close enough so I was a fan. So a lot of these games has been fun to remember.
And to taste. The announcers went to MaryMac's for lunch one day with camera and they keep showing shots of the heavenly food. MaryMac's is an institution in Atlanta. The food is down home and delicious and very Southern.
So... it is fodder. Anyone and anything from the South is fair game. An easy target for any reference to anything backward, old, toothless, witless, country, and not in a good way.
I was raised in the South. I left as soon as I could. I would not ever move back there or anywhere close to there. Ever.
But, as I watch these games and hear our announcers make fun of the food and the people and the weather and the mores of the South, I am amazingly defensive. Those who mock are those who are the fodder in my book.
I think if I were truthful and made an exhaustive list of all about the South that I hate and I love, the columns would be exactly equal. It's my own little civility war.
p.s. I have had this continuing problem with today's fried chicken. I can't find any that taste like fried chicken used to. We even have a great friend chicken place here and it's not the same - not even that good to my taste. But, if I could just taste MaryMac's fried chicken, I would know for sure. When last I crunched on it, it was indistinguishable from my Mom's and my Mom made the best fried chicken ever. Hands down. No contest. Now I am starving.
