When I was little my father traveled a lot - a whole lot.  He was often home on weekends but when he was not - a big trip, he'd often bring us home a trinket or treasure.  One of the very very very best most  coveted trip gifts was a Surprise Ball.  I remember being willing to sell my soul for one of those suckers.  Once, when I was old enough to have my own allowance and buy my own presents, I bought Daddy a Surprise Ball for some occasion or another.  It was bright yellow with a smiley face drawn in black.

I remember it well because he never did open it.  He kept it on his dresser for years and years and years and years.  It was there when he died.

I never hear or see or think about a Surprise Ball without remembering him in the most wonderful way.

Today's remembrance is thanks to not martha.
