Tivo recorded a new program for me from BBC America - The Life Laundry. A team of one perky American woman and a non-descript Brit guy go around England and find messy homes. They clean out the shit and then redecorate a bit. They show all the stuff and how they got rid of it. It's very nice to see people with more clutter than me.

And now I finally know what a boot sale is! [livejournal.com profile] aellia's always talking about boot sales and I had kind of pieced together the concept from the context. But, now I know for sure.

Here in the west (and most of the rest of the country) we call it a yard sale. In the northeast, it's a tag sale.

But really it's more of a rummage sale - everyone brings their stuff to one place and sells it. In California there were a couple of old outdoor drive in movie theaters that turned into giant rummage sales on weekends. Great fun.

That perky American woman really gets my goat ...people *that* perky should get a slap!

She also subscribes a bit too much to the *thro stuff out to get rid of amotional baggage* type of thing...a bit new wave for me I suppose

(can't tell I watch it...can you?)

I have visions of you thinking that all that was sold there were *boots*!!!
The name comes from when it first started to be popular here and people would come together abd sell their things from the boots of their cars..
I suspect that's confused you even more though..what do you call that part of the car there? :-)

If this sort of thing is held indoors here..like in a church hall..it's called a *jumble sale*
Your last sentence made me smile..lots!

Trunks here are attached to pachyderms

Or contain clothes (usually in storage)

Or are a type of mens underwear

*laugh*

And we get drugs from Boots

Oh and Boots is a cartoon dog The Perishers (http://www.shadowgallery.co.uk/perishers.html)

And in the Midwest we call it a "Garage Sale" named after the item's venue or orign.

Here in the midwest it is a garage sale if it's at home and a flea market if it's the kind where a bunch of people get together and sell items at a designated place.
