Du jour... so far...
Jan. 7th, 2009 12:17 pmI had some work work this morning and when I got caught up, I decided to tackle the computer. I have two perfectly good 80 GB internal hard drives I'm not using and one of my computers has a 60 GB C drive that's not got a world of free space left so I thought I'd stuff one of the spare drives into that computer and take some of the load off the C.
I've swapped drives on my other computer but I'd never been inside this one and didn't know the territory. And hardware isn't my long suit. But, I've watched enough Tekzilla and Systm and DL.TV shows to at least know which end of the screw driver to use. So I went to my storage closet and pulled out the box labeled "Stuff that Bill send with the computers". In there I found a lot of screws and some hard drive cables so I went to work.
Now this computer is not the one that sits on top of the desk with totally easy access. Oh, no, this one is the one under the desk in the dark and hard to get to. The business side of the computer actually faces the wall.
But, I got in and got the drive in and hooked it up and turned it on and nothing. Nada. Nothing on the screen. I reset everything and turned it on again. Same. I unplugged the drive and turned it on again. Nothing.
I started an email to my brother and was half way into it when I heard the Vista is on music behind me. I just hadn't waited long enough. So I turned it off and plugged the new drive back in and turn it on and waited. Success! There it was. I set it to format and put the case back together and back in place and realized that Travis had given me the kitty gift of napping the whole time instead of helping. What a guy.
Then I realized that a drive was missing. I have several USB drives attached to this computer so it took me a minute to figure out what was missing. For way longer than is even funny, I thought it was the second DVD drive until I realized that this machine only has one.
Finally I figured out it was a really really old USB Buslink drive that was malfunctioning. Some unplugging and resetting and sweet talk coaxed it back to life and I set my Desktop TiVo and Juice and Eye Fi to find what they need on the new drive.
All is well except spending the morning hunched under the desk has drawn unnecessary attention to some muscles around my neck, shoulders, back, legs, etc., yada, yada...

New yarn came today!!
