Writing and Eating
Jul. 30th, 2002 04:31 pmOk, these are still unformed thoughts but I thought maybe I'd just see if they could form themselves here...
People on diets know that giving up food is not possible. People with drinking problems can aim for no booze at all. People who aim to quit smoking look for a life without cigarettes. But people on a diet have to eat something or they will not live.
People who can make music are special. People who can write are special. A lot of people cannot and know they cannot make music. (I can squak but the only instrument I can play is the radio and that's only on a good day.) But, except for the people who are truly illiterate, everone who can write. We all write every day - the grocery list, email, a program in C++. But not everyone can write well or even marginally well.
I'm often asked why I don't write a book. I love reading books and I spend my days writing marketing materials. Neither reading or writing marketing materials makes me any more capable of writing a good novel or any other kind of book than anyone else. I not only do not have the imagination it takes to craft a plot or group of plots, I know I don't have the talent.
Ok, see, I thought if I could get these ideas down, they would make sense. I think all I did was prove that I really don't have a talent for writing!
