Earthquake

My manager says we have an earthquake coming. He says he is of the sort who gets premonitions about these things. I have no idea if he's delusional. I do know him well enough to know he believes he can foretell earthquakes. So I guess we'll see. I asked him big or little and noted that I really can't afford another big one. He said big, sorry. Oh well. Stay tuned.

I used to date a guy who was the first to feel any earthquake. We lived in Northern California and after the 'big one' in 1989 we had weeks and weeks of aftershocks. Whenever there was one and I was with Bobby, here's the way it would go...

Bobby calling from the kitchen or some other room: Earthquake!
Me: huh?
Bobby: Earthquake!
Me: when?

Earth moves. It happened over and over again - gave me the creeps every time.

But, I did make a little money on those aftershocks. I got so I could successfully judge the scale. Whenever you were with a bunch of people and an aftershock hit, everyone would toss $5 on the table and call out their Richter nums. I made a tidy little sum on AfterShock Bingo.

My last earthquake - February 2001 - ended up costing me close to several grand and few of the drawers in my furniture at home ever quite closed right since. I don't mind the earthquake but I really am not interested in another house toss.

Did you ask what the lead time on his premonitions is? Should we be expecting news in hours, days or months? :)

Stay safe!

I got confused. You were talking about AfterShock Bingo, and then you mentioned losing a few grand in the Feb '02 quake... so I just assumed that you are a hardcore gambler who lost a ton of money betting on the Richter. And then I saw the pictures, and it suddenly makes a lot more sense. You would have had more fun if you had gambled, I thik.

A nice big volcano like that just outside of town and you're wasting you natural disasters on simple things like earthquakes?

Is there a quake map for Seattle like there is for California? If the big one cuts loose I'd like to see the geological details y'know.

Your bloke was probably getting the compression wave before the ground wave turned up, you get a bump followed by the shake. Apparently in the big ones you can actually hear a bang when teh fault goes and that should give you time to bend over and kiss your ass goodbye.

Hmm, not a lot of info but some fun maps... aren't you at ground zero for these?

How big was the 2001?

A 7 round here would have me walking to work for a couple of years because all the concrete block pavement of the I880 and 101 is standing on landfill and mud, so it would rotate and all that. The 1989 quake here was 70 miles away, when Heyward fault lets go with a 7.5 I want to be living in Cape Breton Island or something.

Yikes!

Did your boss mean up there in Seattle...or just "somewhere?"

I do know that there is a prediction by a geologist in Europe, I think...saying that we (West Coast) will have a large earthquake approximately the first week of September this year.

Nice, huh?

I know we can't get warned, but if all 3 of my pets are not sleeping or sitting around in my apartment, and under the bed or hiding..I will know that somethings up!

Supposedly cats DO feel some sort of magnetic "field" a bit before.

And while I too have been in a big one (Northridge) I had to laugh at your expertise at the betting on magnitude!

At work, we didn't bet for $$$$, (darn, we should have!) but we'd all state our guesses too, then eagerly wait for the official radio news announcement (not the preliminary report...nope..that didn't count) from USGS.

Until then, this is all we have:
