My Teddy Kennedy moment
Aug. 26th, 2009 09:18 amThe older sister of my best friend in high school was Mary Jo Kopechne's roommate. When the scandal broke (and it was HUGE at the time. I'm talking HUGE.), my friend's mother had to go to Washington to help fend off all the press. My friend stayed with me while her mother was gone.
I remember being totally caught up in the drama. And there was lots of it. (I did mention it was HUGE, didn't I?)
Before that, it was a generally held belief that the Kennedys were perfect in every way - American royalty. Even by my very Republican parents. And the dalliances of powerful politicians were rarely exposed.
Interestingly, the consensus then was just about how it turned out. The whole bag o' beans would dent but not damage Kennedy's career or name. And you never hear from the Kopechne family.
