It's been pretty cloudy here for the past two days so while the sun was out this morning, it was still pretty cool and breezy - especially in the shade.  I set out for the yarn shop.  The shop is on the same street I live on but up hill and down hill and north about 3 miles.  So I took a bus until I had passed all the hills and then got out and walked the rest of the way.

It's in a section of town that is filled with little boutique shops.  Excellent window shopping.  I got there about 15 minutes before it opened but there was a spot for sitting in the shade just in front of the shop so I did and I people watched.

The shop itself is very nice and classy looking and the two women working in it were really nice.  I wandered and touched and marveled at all the beautiful yarns.  Knitting has come back into vogue in the past few years and they are making so many beautiful yarns these days.  However, all those beautiful yarns are hugely expensive.

For instance, I use nice, soft, inexpensive washable yarns for my afghans.  The kind of yarn you get at Walmart.  A good sized blanket takes about $30-$40 worth of this yarn which I think is pretty reasonable.  The yarns in this new shop, and most of the yarn shops out there today, would make a beautiful blanket - some maybe even washable - but the amount of yarn needed to make the same sized blanket would run $200-$300 if I used the cheapest in the shop.

So I bought sock yarn.  Even that's kind of pricey, if you just need socks.  I bought enough yarn to make two pair and it was $26.

On, then with my walk. I discovered that I could walk towards the library - my next stop - on flat ground in the shade!  So I did.  It was great.  I saw stuff I hadn't ever paid attention to before.  [livejournal.com profile] kjaz, you can bring Parker when you come to Seattle cause I found a bark park!  Right in the middle of town!!

The library was desserted.  I had a huge stack of books waiting for me and some CD's.  There was this old guy in line next to me when the library guy brought my stack.  The old guy got all excited because my CD's were Tom Lehrer.

Tom Lehrer is a satarist of the highest order.  He made us laugh through the 60's.  (Interestingly, the most recent article I found about his in my quick search this morning is an Australian one... Stop clapping, this is serious.  Anyway, the old guy and the library begged to see the CD's I had and I was afraid for a bit I was going to have to knock him down to get them back.  It was funny.

From the library it was a lovely, cool, downhill walk home.  Nice... just very nice....

I've often thought it strange that people, even just a short while ago, used to knit and sew to save money, now it's a luxury to be able to do so...have you seen the price of dressmaking patterns..could nearly buy a new dress for the price of one!
I got bored yesterday and did some of you puzzles...now I know how to turn the pieces,I'll be doing more..lol

When I was a freshman or sophomore in college, the junior class --- which normally hired a big, famous band for their fall dance --- hired Tom Lehrer instead. A lot of the folks were really pissed, 'cause they wanted to dance, but most of us loved it. I still have some old LPs of his and recently bought a couple of the CDs.

What a sharp, pointed wit! I would love to hear him in person again.

Ok, I know where the bark park is... (I work right in front of it) but what yarn store? The new one that just opened?
