A plan for organization
Jul. 18th, 2004 08:54 amI know I've written this entry before.
It's too hot for humans. On the agenda for today is to add a book to the book review page, do the laundry, watch the ballgame, knit the latest pair of socks... I should just call this entry #278. Next Sunday, I can just post #278 and everyone will be able to keep up just fine without having to read the same shit over and over again... The heat is frying my attitude.
On the upside, Lean Hansen is not on NPR's Weekend Edition this morning. She has really started to fray my last nerve and I love her vacations.
And, speaking of NPR, I caught Sarah Vowell on Jon Stewart Tivo'd from last week. Thanks to
henare I finally have a name to put with that fabulous voice that has brought me many smiles. She is a staple on one of our wonderful NPR shows - This American Life. She tells wonderful stories in a high pitched flat voice - every word dripping with irony. She and Jon Stewart are one hilarious couple. I'd love to see an hour of just them. (Those who are interested in Sarah Volwell, can get a good feel for her at this great page about her work with audio clips.
I think what I need is a shower and air dry for maximum cooling...

Date: 2004-07-18 09:13 am (UTC)Yours is one of three journals I stumbled upon one day, unaware of LJ and for me...it's a morning ritual that I have repeated since.
Aside from the great items you have described or shopped around and bargained for, pics, puzzles, books and Netflix rentals...I appreciate your entries and thank you for sharing them.

Date: 2004-07-18 09:26 am (UTC)I am not so in love with Sarah as I am with David Sedaris and whatsisname...can't think of his name... And I do like Ira Glass very much, love his laugh and his directness, simplicity.
I have listened to other audio shows and files online and have not gone back to any of them. It is because of this one show that I am also currently pursuing all these audio projects myself. I hope, one day, to offer more than a children's story, read by me.
I like the comfort I get from having an LJ friend who is not afraid of whining. We can whine in unison at times, even.

Date: 2004-07-18 09:53 am (UTC)Yes, Ira Glass has really done wonders for American spoken radio. This American Life stories stay with me forever. I rarely listen from their website because I forget that I can! Thanks for the reminder!!

Date: 2004-07-18 10:30 am (UTC)I am big talkradio listener. On Saturdays and Sundays I enjoy cooking shows, like the one I am listening to right now.
The Hot Tamales:
http://marysueandsusan.com/SR/sr.html
They used to have a cooking show on cable.
You can listen online if not in the L.A. area:
http://www.kfi640.com/interactive/streaming.html
Right now they are discussing "personal watermelons" and "watermelon-lemonade."
It's on from 10-12 on Sunday mornings.
After this, I will listen to Leo LaPorte the Techguy on the same station from 12-3pm
I have learned quite a bit from listening to his show, and join the mirc chatroom during the show.
Leo joins in the chat and its not only educational,
informing...(like security, adware, spyware stuff)
it's entertaining.
www.leoville.com
I don't have cable, but I do know that Leo was on TechTv.
I also listen to Melinda Lee (another cooking maven who used to be on KFI, but is now on KNX 1070 AM.
No streaming available yet, but she's got a good
recipe base on her website:
www.melindalee.com
Anyway...I have never listened to NPR, but now that you have provided your information above, I shall make a point to listen to some!
For me, listening to these cooking shows and PC/tech shows is a welcome respite from the politics and such during most of the week. I look forward to the Saturday/Sunday shows.

Date: 2004-07-18 10:34 am (UTC)the best thing about sarah vowell ..
Date: 2004-07-18 10:40 am (UTC)that, plus she knows a lot of shit. she knows her american history ... and she knows tons about music, too. if seattle has something like this (http://www.cityarts.net/) then you should check it out because she'll do speaking tours whenever she has a new book out .. and it's a hoot.
(you've checked out the books, right?)
Re: the best thing about sarah vowell ..
Date: 2004-07-18 10:50 am (UTC)Somewhow I actually think she's been here a number of times with the Arts and Lecture series and with other things but I was oblivious because you hadn't taught me her name yet! I'm on the lookout now - especially since I also have a face (which was quite different than I had expected).

Date: 2004-07-18 01:45 pm (UTC)Oh, come now. According to the weather report, Seattle is only supposed to go to 75 today. We're going to hit 82.
But you're right about hiding inside. I made a quick run to the store this morning, then came home and fired up the air conditioners. The house is holding nicely at about 70.
