Love it when I meet myself coming
Aug. 21st, 2004 08:53 amI'm listening to NPR and hearing an interesting interview with a guy named Hank Stuever. He has a book of essays called "Off Ramp: adventures and heartache in America elswhere." So I pop over to the library to put it on hold. The website says there are 56 people ahead of me. I click on hold and get a message that says "request failed. contact the circulation desk."
I know from experience that this means "you already have this one on hold, dodo." So I checked my hold list and... yep... it's on the list and, turns out, I'm #2 of those 56 and my copy is 'in transit'...

Date: 2004-08-21 12:07 pm (UTC)1) What's the link to your book list? Does it just list what you've read or do you have a to-be-read list as well? I keep meaning to write down all the books you mention that sound good to me and I've failed miserably so I want to cheat by looking at your list.
2) I have no idea why I think you might like either of these books aside from the fact that I really got sucked into them both and we have some similar reading interests - but you might want to check out Absolutely American by David Lipsky who is a Rolling Stones writer who followed some students through all 4 years of West Point. When I mentioned really enjoying that book, Jeff's father suggested I read Keeping Faith by Frank Schaffer which is about a man who grew up in the 60s and has been any number of things in his life but is mostly a pacifist (my description) who finds his favored son joining the Marine Corp at 18 years old right out of high school and how he deals with it.
3) I may have asked this before but do you ever use a chat program? There have been so many times I've wanted to ask a quick question or make a quick mention to you and haven't had time to drop an email but a chat program would have filled the gap nicely.

2. Both books sound really interesting and are now on the list!
3. You know, I really don't much. At work, I'm always logged onto MSN chat - v-susand@microsoft.com (I think that's how you find me on it.) But at home, no. I used to use Trillian a lot but just kind of fell out of the habit and never fell back in. My work email, my susandennis.com email and my gmail are all automagically polled about every 2 mins so I kind of feel in touch more that way.

Date: 2004-08-21 02:15 pm (UTC)I've added you on MSN because I do use Trillian so if I see you during the work week I may just say hello :). In the meantime I'll try to spend the extra few seconds to drop you an email when I feel the urge to share something.
Right now I feel like I'm more in Seattle than in Austin Tx. It's about 81 degrees outside, very humid and it's pouring rain. Apparently we've got some thunderstorms on the way. The last 2 nights we've had thunderstorms which have been wonderful. I love good thunderstorms - they're so primal and passionate and alive.
Yay here comes the thunder! Hope you're having a good day!
