The key to me

susandennisI did not go to pre-school or kindergarten or day care. I started school when I was 6 with the 1st grade. I knew nothing but I had a goal.
Back then, there was no TV until mid-afternoon. After the test pattern came my favorite show, The Pinky Lee Show. It was a show for kids and I loved it. Pinky Lee danced and sang and was silly. One day he fell down and the screen went blank and then was replaced with white with black letters on it and dead silence. I could not read. School was months away. I ran for my Mom who was doing something in the kitchen and refused to rush to the TV. She told me to go outside. With Pinky Lee on the floor???? Are you nuts??? I begged and pleaded and finally she told me that if I did not get out of her kitchen right that minute, she would turn off the TV for a week.
So I went back and stared at the letters. So frustrated. I hated not knowing what it meant and having to rely on someone to tell me.
Turns out that he had a heart attack - live TV... I think my Mom finally came out and read the letters which said something like 'technical difficulties'. But the die was cast. I would learn how to read and I would do whatever it took so that I would not have to depend on anyone for anything ever again.
Knowing how to read has turned out to be quite handy. I know that someday I will probably have to depend, way more than I like, on people for critical stuff, I do treasure my independence.
