I do remember the days when I had time to read LJ, post pithy entries about co-worker drama, surf the net and shop, and still get a full day's work in. I remember the days even though the memory is growing dim...

I can't seem to get caught up at work. About the time I get everything under control, 3 more gophers pop up out of their hole.

Part of it is that the first hour of every day now seems to be donated to Mom. First I talk to her during my walk from the bus to the office. Then I have to send off a report of the conversation to my sister, brother and sister in law. Then I have to send Polly the requests du jour and/or call someone at 'the home' for some information.

Today was all that times 10. Mom is not a happy camper. She's pissed. Her hands tremble so much that she can't do shit. And they are not getting better, they are getting worse. And she can't breathe and she's wants to know what they are going to do about it. So... Would I call and find out, please?

So I call the social worker and I call the physician's assistant and I leave messages says 'what the heck is going on, please' The social worker calls me back nearly right away. She's a talker. She gave me 5 excellent minutes of update and info. Unfortunately, she took a good 40 minutes to do it.

And of course while I was listening to her prattle on, the PA called and left a message that they were doing what they could.

The social worker did give me the email address and phone number of the nurse in charge and assured me that she is VERY in charge and she's the one I should rely on. Corinne.

I sent an email to Corinne saying we were concerned and wanted to know what was going on. Corinne called me about 2 minutes after I hit 'send' and apologized saying that she hadn't checked her email for a couple of hours and was so sorry that it took her so long to call. ???? She was very nice and very clear and very easy to understand.

Her key points were:

  • They aren't giving up on recovery quite yet.
  • They are working down the list of possible causes of the tremors. They had a good long list of possibilities but are quickly working through the list and checking them off with no fix. They are beginning to understand that the cause, they suspect is the combo of medications critical to her breathing.
  • So... It might very well turn out that the choice is breath with shake hands or have quiet hands with no breathing at all. (I'm thinking they would be VERY quiet.)
  • If they can't get the tremors fixed, she's likely never going back to her apartment.
She said that she and the rest of the staff were all in agreement that they should neither be too optimistic nor too pessimistic with Mom until they know for sure and they aren't sure when that will be.

And you can top off all that with the hurricane possibilities. Sheesh.

And, of course, another chunk of time is spent responding to my sister's four or five emails a day - 'yes, I have talked to x' and 'yes, I do have y's phone number and will call if I think it's necessary' and 'yes, I do know z and y and every other fucking thing she needs me to confirm... ' I'm giving serious thought to accidently getting her email address caught in my spam filter....

And another day goes by.

I'm looking forward to some quality me time this wonderful three day long weekend!

Corinne sounds like an excellent nurse who is on top of things and gave you a really straight forward description of what was going on.

I guess you will just have to wait and see what happens, as difficult as it is.

Those nasty hurricanes

Hey Susan,

I hope your family is safe from the hurricanes. Since I have family and friends in both Florida and North Carolina, I am constantly tracking the storm with the Internet to see what is happening.

And what the heck are you doing up so early?

Have a great three day weekend.
