Vegas, Baby!
Jan. 5th, 2011 02:50 pmI'm at the gate. My flight is supposed to leave in an hour. There are several others at this gate who appear to be CES bound.
In the olden days - before light rail - I used to take a bus to the airport. It was easy peasy. Usually took an hour. Rarely more. They killed that route when they got light rail and said it would be much faster to the airport because there is no traffic. It was faster. By 5 minutes. And the walk from the train to the plane was about 4 times longer than the walk from the bus to the plane. But, I counted it as gym so I'm cool.
And, actually, very cool because after all that walking I was frying in my long sleeved shirt, sweater and jacket. I switched out to a short sleeved shirt and packed the other shirt and the sweater... better.
The security line was not short, but it moved along. Just as we got to the take off your shoes/put everything in a bin part, I realized I had forgotten to empty my water bottle. I really wanted to keep the bottle so I chugged it. The guy behind me was very impressed. I got my naked picture taken. It was painless. I didn't ask for copies. They didn't ask for an autograph.
I got a sandwich, filled the water bottle and landed in the gate area. Seatac has free wifi which they blast over the loudspeaker. I could not latch on at first so I took the opportunity to activate the Verizon deal that comes with this cr-48. 2 years 100GB a month free. Kind of funky to have NO connection and click on activate, fill the form in and then, bam, internet! And it tracks how much you are 'spending' which is nice.
The boarding process was smooooth and I had my first celebrity sighting! Melissa D'Arabian ($10 Meals on Food Network) was in line right behind me. While we waited to get into the cabin, I turned around and told her how much I enjoyed her show and how much I loved the cut off green onions to grow more trick. She lit up like no one had ever recognized her before. It was kind of cute and I was glad I said something.
The flight was pretty boring but I managed it. Note to self: before you go home, load up the NY Times and USA Today apps.
When I got off the plane there was a note from my brother that his plane was late taking off. But, this airport has free wifi, too... so I fired up the cr-48 and found out that he's only about 20 minutes late. He should be here in less than an hour.
There was an email from my boss outlining changes in our benefits: 1.The matching percentage will be increasing from 1% to 3% for our retirement savings money, 2. Minor changes - all good to the medical stuff and 3. For about the next 9 months our 20% contribution to the medical insurance will be 0%. Every year, in January, he sends out a note like this only usually, it's bad news. Not this year!
So here I am in VEGAS!!!!! I just love Las Vegas beyond what is reasonable. When I was little my very favorite store in all the world was Woolworths. And, honestly, it was on the the list of my top 5 until the day it closed. Las Vegas is like Woolworths on steroids.
And then you throw CES and 3 days with my brother onto the pile and it's just the best that the best can be.
