This has been a week that needed a weekend and finally it is here.

I've been thinking about Mom. She always has such a positive attitude about everything. I know she will be fine and dandy. But sometimes a little thought catches me totally off guard. Tonight I remembered her bed.

When I was a baby and my sister was on the way, my parents moved out of Brooklyn into New Jersey and their first house. They when to upstate New York - Syracuse to buy this unusual furniture. It's kind of hard to describe but it is carved or hewned chunky wood. They had tables and desks and bookshelves and a huge sideboard and all kinds of pieces. Mom still has a few tables and end tables and the desks ... and their bed. It's high off the ground and with a high headboard and low footboard. It's a full bed which looks like of small in today's world of queensize and kingsized beds. They slept in that bed for 50 years. Daddy had what turned out to be his fatal heart attack in that bed. I think she thought of him a lot in that bed in the year since. And tonight the thought crossed my mind that she will never sleep in that bed again. That makes me very sad but most of all I worry that she will think of it in the same way. I don't want her to have to think of stuff she'll never have or see again.

On the other side of the emotional spectrum. Tonight's Mariner game is very special. Ichiro broke a record of the most number of hits in a season. The record has been on the books for more than 80 years. It was very cool. The entire team gathered on the field for a giant group hug. The opposing team, the Rangers, doffed their caps. Ichiro was gracious and looked humbled and grateful. The guy who's record has stood that long was George Sisslar. George's daughter was on hand and his grandson (who looks to be my age). They have both been interviewed this week saying they wre delighted to be here to see the new record set. Ichiro went over and shook their hands. It was very very nice.

This season has sucked eggs through tiny holes but Ichiro has made it better.

I have good books to read, two Tivos stuffed with new programs, an afghan to knit, walks to take... It promises to be a nice, nice weekend.

Awwww, about your Mom and Dad's bed. Is there a way to keep it in the family? Or as you suggested earlier, in storage?

That may ease the pang for it for her.

I've just caught up on the past few days of LJ, and your Mom.

Enjoy your weekend...well-deserved!

Oh, yes, the rest of baseball has been giving it lots of attention. ESPN cut away from the Anaheim-Oakland game to show each of his first two at-bats. When 80+-year-old records fall, baseball notices.

The bed is kind of a symbol of what used to be. Kind of an end to an era. I gave my parents old bed to my step-daughter, she got rid of it. I was mad because I told her not to, then I thought about it, and it really doesn't matter, the memories are in my head. I am rambling, but it's funny how some things just bring back memories.

It can now create memories for some other family who might need it.

I have an old sleigh double bed I bought from a friend in a spare room. It holds someone elses memories.
