And the tale gets worse...
Jan. 31st, 2011 04:39 pmAfter my last entry, I tried to get to work again but kept hitting problems. This time I thought it was RAS issues but quickly figured out it was still internet connection problems. The modem is fine and when connected directly, no issue. From the computer to the router is fine.
So it must be the router and the two switches. I start to dismantle. Nothing, of course, is labeled. Who was the idiot who wired this place anyway????
I almost had everything figured out and had the two switches out and was getting ready to re-hook up the router when the phone rang. It was a Comcast technician. And, apparently one who was put on to my problem by ComcastBill on Twitter. He said he was out in the field and could see that there was a big problem with my service. Major packet loss. And he could see that it was intermittent.
I said it was like someone was flipping the switch on and off and he said 'yep, that's exactly what I'm seeing!'
I'll be damned. He said it was the worst kind of problem because it was on and off. But, he said he was calling in the troops and hope to have them at it tonight or, if not, first thing in the morning. (Happily, the problem isn't only mine - I'm sharing, apparently.)
I'd probably be bald and several years old and spent the next 5 hours trying to get my perfectly working router and switches to work. ARUGH. He likely has no idea the grief he prevented.
I hung up and apologized to the router and both switches. And I put everything back together and this time I labeled the fucking cables.
Now I have my work and my personal laptops connected to the internet via my EVO phone which has stepped up to the plate like a champ. The other computers, the TV, the webcam and the TiVos will all just have to make do as best they can.
This has been one hellofa day. Whew.
