Isolation....
May. 10th, 2011 06:43 pmI hate the fact that the iPad is dependent on PC software. What decade is this anyway? Plus I hate iTunes.
I had it installed on the laptop that died and it was forever nagging me for updates and other stuff that I didn't care about. Plus, it kept going into other folders on my PC and collecting stuff I didn't want it to collect.
So this time I'm thinking about setting up a separate account on this new laptop and installing it there. I don't suppose it has an option for installing for that user only but if it does, I will certainly select it. I need to think this through... I don't want iTunes touching any of my stuff or messing with me. I only want it for the occasional iPad OS upgrade and backup.
One funny little wrinkle is my DVD drive. It has only a Y USB cable - it takes 2 USB ports to power it which is great because then it does not need electricity. Except... the forks of the Y are such that the USB ports need to be within 1 or 2 inches of each other. This machine has only 2 USB ports - one on one side of the computer and one on the other. This could be interesting...
I could maybe find a power adapter or use a powered USB hub or use USB extension... Hopefully one of those scenarios will work out.
I popped for the faster processor even though it was about 10% more. So it may just be my imagination but it sure feels so fast and snappy. And it's pretty. And it's very light weight.
------------
Tomorrow morning is my head slicing. I have to be there at 7:30 and then be home to run a training session at 10. The head doctor is an easy bus ride, thankfully. And the training session is via Live Meeting. I'm sure grateful for both things.
------------
Several times today I have gotten a warning from Google about my LJ friends page - some link on it to some bad site. I rarely click on links anyway unless I recognize the URL so I'm not worried but it was becoming a little annoying. I was going to get a screen grab of it to post but, of course, now it's not showing up.
