Talking to Mom
Nov. 4th, 2004 08:00 amEvery morning, I get off the bus and start my 10 minute walk to my office. I use the walk time to fire up the Treo and call Mom. We talk while I walk. With the luxury of the time difference she has had her breakfast and shower and read the paper and is dressed for the day when I call which is usually about 9:15 her time.
Some mornings, she has an agenda. "Tell me again what we do about...." Or "Did you talk to Bank of America and get the Visa thing fixed?" Some mornings we just ramble.
As she gets better and more settled into her new life she is more and more her old self and it's nice to hear. My brother tells me that my calls are her kind of anchor on the day. I have gotten used to making them and really don't mind and sometimes they just give me a smile to start the day...
Mom: Is it cold there this morning?
Me: Oh yeah - the frost is on the pumpkin. Well, I'm extrapolating. I haven't actually seen a pumpkin this morning.
Mom: It's really not fair for you to use those big words with me when I can't look them up on my computer. Please just hold them all until after you are here to fix it at Thanksgiving, ok?
