susandennisSo, I got to the boss's office in plenty of time... I had everything all set up and ready when the IT guy got there. He took one look and then took a sniff and declared the motherboard fried. "I can smell the burning plastic."
I had not thought to sniff it. In fact, snorting hardware has never been one of my troubleshooting tips. Guess I'll add it in!
As it happens, he had another laptop - same model - right there. He took the old hard drive and put it in the other computer and it came right up with all my stuff!!
I looked at the time and it was 11:40. Swim class is at noon. I was in Fremont. Swim class is in the Central District. (not close). What the hell, right? Nothing ventured... So I hauled ass. I was in the water jogging with everyone else at 12:05! Class was great. I was so glad I made the effort.
Then home to get the computer righted. I use Bitlocker and Bitlocker does not like to move into new houses... So I spent an hour on the phone with corporate IT trying to make Bitlocker happy. It's now happy. Now I'm doing windows updates... there's regular and there's system admin. Once I get both of them green - no updates - I can get back to work!
Whew. This could have been soooooo much uglier.
