Un-hoarding... Part the first-ish
Oct. 26th, 2011 10:32 amWhew. Part One is done. Before I can get to my desk area to start cleaning it all out, I first have to clean out the stuff that is stashed in the hall. This is office type stuff that I have rarely touched in the past 5 years so you'd think it would be easy. Not so fast... It was not easy and it was dusty.
Here's most of the result. The big plastic bin is trash - office supplies that are broken or unusable or already used or just not worth anyone's having. See the books? Those are knitting books and patterns I have not looked at in years and years. The amazon bags? Those are perfectly usable - and never used before - most still shrink wrapped - office supplies. No shit. And that does not include the 5,000 pens, pencils, sharpies and endless supply of post it notes or anything else in the desk/credenza area.

Unfreakin' believable. The stuff not in that pile is in another plastic bin like that one. It's about 3/4ths full of stuff that I'm not throwing out yet but stuff that can go down into the storage area mostly.
I cannot part with the IBM Selectric, Composer and Magnetic Tape Selectric, Composer Conversion Scale - or what non-techies would call a ruler - with lots of marks on it.
I found one notebook that I obviously used on some job I had. The back page was a list of names and numbers - like team members contact info. My name is on the list and I do not recognize the name of any of the other 14 people on that list. No clue where I was even working at the time. Reading the notes didn't even tip me off. It went into the trash.
We have a spot down in the garage that my neighbor, Ann, calls the Free Mall. It's a shelf where people put random shit they don't want - Goodwill type stuff. It's kind of amazing. No one abuses the privilege, leaves too much or crappy stuff. Stuff never stays there for long either. I put all those bags and the knitting books/patterns down there. If they are still there in a couple of days, I'll pack 'em up for the Goodwill. IF I can resist 'shopping' there in the interim!
Next the credenza and then the desk drawers. My game plan is to pull everything out and sort it into must have, nice to have, trash and find someplace else for this. But, I might not start that today. Right now I'm tired and dusty and I need to rest up before swimming.
