I had so much trouble with Mom's computer when I was there. Between it's being Windows2000 and it's being full of crap (probably spyware and worse) and it's conversion over to DSL which didn't make it really really happy, I was just not at all sure that it was going to operate after I left town.

And, I was not at all sure that Mom had enough computer marbles left to operate it anyway.

But, it looks kind of like I was wrong on both counts.

My phone rang this morning and it was Mom.

Mom: My mouse is broken.
Me: Broken?
Mom: Yes, it won't move the thing on the screen and no light is on. But all the other lights are on -the black thing (dsl modem) and everything looks fine and the nice man told me I had mail. But the mouse won't work.
Me: Why don't we try rebooting.
Mom: Good idea BUT, I can't because my mouse is broken!!!

Meanwhile I'm madly trying to get logged onto GoToMyPc which is neither fast or cooperating. And somehow the obvious clt+alt+del just didn't pop into my brain. Plus, in retrospect, I'm not sure three buttons at once is in her repertoire.

So I had her find the Windows key and then the arrow keys and from there we got to the Shut Down... Once rebooted the mouse came right back to life.

It makes NO sense to me that the mouse just died. It is a new mouse. When my brother was there in the Fall, he bought her a new mouse because he said the old one had a gummy ball. Whatever. It's a Logitech mouse and I think it's optical. But still. And... There is no way she could get behind the computer to touch it. No one has been in to even bump it. And even with all that, there is no way a simple warm reboot should fix it. I am stumped but grateful and she is very grateful.

I got this note just after:

I can't believe we fixed the computer. I'm so happy. I checked the news and my stocks and ordered a new robe. Whew. Now I need to rest.
