a proud geek moment
Dec. 24th, 2004 02:31 pmWhen Mom's computer was connected via Comcast, I could VNC onto her computer easily and quickly and flawlessly anytime I wanted from any computer.
When we moved to BellSouth, DSL, I could never get it to work again. I've been using GoToMyPC which does work but I hate the company and they charge $20 a month for the service. VNC is so free and so faster...
My brother did get Mom all Windows XP (let's hear a collective 'whew'!) which is so good in so many ways. BUT, VNC was still 'failing to connect.' We tried Remote Desktop and no go. We put GoToMyPC on and I could get in that way but it bugged me. My brother got to the end of his patience, I could tell and I suggested that he call BellSouth tomorrow or Sunday.
And then I started googling for serious. At first I found nothing and then I started to get clues. I saw a reference to the modem that BellSouth gave Mom... And then I saw it referred to as a router and then the lightbulb went off. About 2 clicks later I found a website with step by step instructions on how to open up the ports on that very modem to let VNC shine though. Bingo! I'm sooooo happy.
They are off doing Christmasey stuff now and he likely won't get to it until tomorrow but I know it will work. I just do and I'm so proud and relieved.
