Notes from Today... So far
Dec. 29th, 2004 12:32 pmI managed yesterday evening and all night and this morning without a bandage on my skinless right hand in hopes that it would dry out, scab up and get well immediately. It did dry out and scab up but I had to bandage it up again this morning because Karen was in my office for some help with some publishing issues and she could not stand to see it. It is gross. But at least it only hurts now when I touch it or knock it on something and my knees are much better.
My Mom's connection changes IP's on a whim, it appears. When she was with Comcast, her IP changed every six months or so, maybe. Sometimes when she rebooted but often as not she maintained the same IP address over a reboot. When I first noticed the changing earlier in the week, I thought she was rebooting a lot. I was afraid to ask. But, today, she was not even there and it changed twice while I was checking!
I need the IP Address to VNC onto her computer. Right now I have a little program on her computer that sends up the current address every 5 minutes to a website. It's free and it's easy. But, it's all I got. If something happened to it, I'd be dead in the water. The idea of explaining to Mom over the phone how to find and then tell me what her IP address is just makes my head hurt.
I used to have a little program that sent an email when the address changed. I looked all over for it and finally found it on an old, abandoned website. It polls and then reports either via FTP or via email. The thing is so old it uses a random unsecured SMTP server - ahhhh those were the days when you could just use any old SMTP to send out mail. I need to spend some time fiddling with the program to make sure it does what I want and Mom won't be affected. And then I'll pop it on to her computer for a backup IP reporting situation.
There are a lot of faux DNS and real DNS faux server services - some even free but none are simple enough for me to understand without a lot of conjuring. Maybe next time I'm out there, I'll noodle on one of the fancier deals.

I emailed 2 2MB zip files to my Gmail account about 3 hours ago and they are not there yet. Very surprising. Gmail is always so quick. Hmmmm.
Netflix has a new 'share with friends' feature. It sounds like you will be able to have a 'friends' list and anyone on it will be able to see your queue. It's in beta and by invitation only and I got no invitation but when they make it available it will be quite handy, I think. And fun. To see and to share.

Mom went out to lunch today. The first Christmas after Daddy died, a couple called Mom and asked her out to lunch. They are young and Daddy had helped him in some business thing that I never knew the details of and Mom forgot. Mother had met them but didn't know them very well. Anyway, they came and picked her up and took her to a very fancy restaurant and Mom had a ball. She loved the food. She loved talking to them and hearing new stuff. It was so nice.
But, what was even nicer is that they have now done this every single year! Mom never hears from them any other time (which is fine) but like clockwork, between Christmas and New Years, they come get her and take her to some place swank.
This year she said a couple of times that she really didn't want to go. She had to call them and tell them she had moved and that she couldn't maneuver steps any more. And it's just hard for her to manage with the oxygen and getting around. I told her that she really didn't have to if she didn't want to but I left it alone. Today was the day.
And she had a great time. She had a fabulous lunch and so enjoyed the company and really had a wonderful time. I do not even know these people - I know their last name is Brown. But I think it is so wonderful of them to do this for her. I hope they know what a good thing they are doing.

Lunch is over and HTML is calling.
