Yesterday's designer finally called. Her phone pitch was worse than her voicemail message. There is no need to tell me your hourly rate before we even get 4 words into the conversation and your rate sounds like you might be dealing in particle board furniture and I promised [livejournal.com profile] kjaz no particle board.

Today I went back to the ASID website and fired up a list of websites by Washington State and clicked through every single freakin' one of them. It was not a surprise to find about 15% of them being actually bad or abandoned URLs. Designers not in Seattle got eliminated. Websites with required Flash got eliminated. Websites with sound got eliminated.

Then I looked at style and presentation and got a good list of 4. I sent email to the top one on the list. She gets 24 hours to respond.

Oh and my neighbor, Scott, the realtor, sent a note this morning saying he had no idea of a good designer or how to find one but that he would quiz everyone in his office and report back.

So, I'm feeling encouraged. A little.

No Flash and no sound? Perfect! I have flash blocked but some of the company garbage requires it (idiots). Web sites with sound have been a bad experience for me, I typically thinks somethings gone wrong with my machine until I realize it's some bloody midi file playing some garbage tune the idiot thought was cute and appropriate.

We used to have keyboards with an electronic click, we also had screwdrivers and wire cutters. Silence is golden. Silent and stationary web pages are good.

Oh, I appear to be ranting. Sorry, back to work for me.

I normally run with the sound turned off. People occasionally point me to "oh you gotta see this!" sites and I discover that without the sound they're pointless. At which point I close the tab and go on to the next thing.

We have altogether enough sources of sound in our world. My computer can keep its mouth shut, thank you.

Wonder if it would just be easier to fly someone in from L.A. where there's surely a designer with time, interest, personality and talent who would love a job like yours?

Hard to believe the lukewarm response you're getting up there.

you are a very brave woman.

i'm sure my home is much more in need of a designer/decorator/whatever, but i'm not sure i'd hunt for a designer from gasp! the general public. all of these piles of paper and crap actually represent order!
