Mom has two long term care insurance policies with American Express. For a variety of reasons (mainly an asshole financial adviser) I have spent long hours fighting with American Express over her accounts. Finally, last year, I got that all settled. When she went into assisted living, I decided to file a claim. I figured the worst that could happen is that they would say no.

It was like pulling a fucking barge with my teeth to get the folks at 'the home' to finally do their part of the claim application and then they told me that Mom's doctor wouldn't give them his report. I called Mom's doctor and his office manager said she had faxed it over 3 times. I got her to fax it to me and I faxed it to American Express myself.

I finally got everything submitted and figured if I didn't hear by Valentine's Day, I'd give 'em a jingle and let them tell me in person that Mom's current situation isn't covered.

Yesterday, the woman who pays Mom's bills sent me an email that she had a check for $6,500 from American Express!!!! This is payment for November, December and part of January and from here on out, she'll get $85.50 a day!!!! Yahooo yahooo yahoooo!

Today is Mom's 82nd birthday. We agreed that this was a nice little birthday present.

Of course, now the problem of investing her money gets to be even more of a problem. She has cash. She is living off of a trust that Daddy set up. And she gets social security checks every month, now American Express checks and some money from some other retirement investments that Daddy made. So she now has a fairly substantial pile of cash in her checking account. I've been trying to get her broker guy to invest it for her and it's also been like pulling that fucking barge with my teeth.

I met with him at Thanksgiving and asked him to please take the lead and get aggressive and lead her into investing. She is willing, she just needs a nudge. The money is basically losing money at this point. I've sent emails, I've called, I've begged. They guy just moves like she's got 50 years to think about this. Today I get a note from him that he's going to call her next week to set up an appointment. I wrote him back and asked him to please not wait. The woman is not getting younger. And she might as well have her money in the freakin mattress for godsake! He wrote back and said he would get out there this week. Thank fucking you.

I've finally decided to go with the way cheap health insurance. $2,500 deductible. Since I have no triggering event, I had to fill out their 28 page form. Have you been diagnosed, treated and/or medicated for the following conditions in the past 10 years.... And the list goes on for 28 pages. The last time I saw a doctor (except a dentist 3 times and a plastic surgeon to get a wart kind of thing removed) was about 20 years ago, I can safely say that I have not been diagnosed, treated and/or medicated for all 28 pages worth of conditions. But, man, I gotta tell you, that list is pretty scarey!

My cold really is going going going but after reading over the list of stuff I could have, I'm just grateful to have had just a simple 10 day cold!

I did pay the $7 to get that mystery by email thing. Turns out I'm just not into it. It's an interesting concept and I'm ok with spending the money to support something new and different but I can cheerfully decline the next one.

I am really having a hard time trying to figure out LJ's picture thing (foto building/ScrapBook/whatever). What I'm really trying to figure out is how to use Semagic to upload the picture so that I can write an entry, use a picture and upload the whole thing in one swoop. But, apparently, there is a trick I am missing. I need to dig through the communities I think for the missing pieces to this puzzle.

The days are definitely getting longer here. I can tell in the afternoons but this morning when I got off the bus, it was not the pitch black it has been. There was just a hint that light was on its way.

Bloody hell! Something that actually pays out like it was supposed to? Incredible.

Me too!! If it is hard for you, I don't feel nearly as stupid since you are light years ahead of me, computerwise.

Which health insurance company did you go with? I guess it's inevitable that us self employed's should bite the bullet and pony up for health insurance. When I was doing film freelance I had it through my union, but that no longer applies. And of course, the older you get, the more you think about it. *sigh* Insurance is such a rip-off but the "what if's" are intimidating.
