So at 4 a.m. my phone rings... I was so asleep. Voice mail got to it before I did. Then I heard the computer tell me I had mail and I looked and there was an email from Mom saying that her email was broken. I listened to the voice mail and it was Mom saying that she had called Comcast and they said she needed new drivers. But, she wanted to let me know she was up and all was fine.

I went back to sleep.

When I got to work, I checked and her IP was not responding. She had some mail on her email server so it wasn't getting to her (I have it set up to delete from server when it downloads).

So I called. She was so embarrassed about having called me in the middle of the night. "I didn't even think about the time difference." (she's in South Carolina, I'm in Seattle) She said the nice lady at Comcast ('who is in Canada, isn't that interesting??') had made her turn off the computer and turn it back on and stuff and nothing worked so she set up an appointment for the Comcast guy to come out next Tuesday. (Maybe he's driving from Canada???)

  • What's on the screen now?

  • Nothing, it's broken.

  • Nothing? You mean it's turned off?

  • Oh no, the little light on the front is on but the screen is black.

  • Little light in the front - you mean the front of the part that is on top of the table?

  • Yes, the front of the computer.

  • What about the front of the part that is on the floor - any lights on there? Like the one in the middle?

  • Well, I don't know... let me look down there.

  • No, no lights on there at all.

  • Why don't you push that button in the middle and see if a light comes on.

  • I don't know, I've never touched that button before. Ok, Oh, yes, it's green! Oh wait, here's the Dell sign on the computer! What a great button! Why didn't you tell me about that button before?

Yep, came back up fine, modem kicked in, connection sound, email in, websites shining. The world is back. Whew. She's calling Canada back now to tell them not to make the trip. She's amazing and she cracks me up.

Just a few memory lapses here and there...I suspect she has actually touched that button before...she really likes that Dell button, huh?

I have a friend who would like her computer to wake up and tell her if she has email. The idea that she actually has to have the computer on and online before it will do this bothers her. I think the future will actually bring this sort of improvement, because everyone's computer will be online all the time. Just a guess.
