I'm losing the internet about every 4 hours. A reboot of the modem fixes it instantly.

Nothing has changed on the network in months. Before this week I probably had not rebooted the router in three months. It's been working flawlessly for the past year. The website lists no firmware update since last July. Comcast says they can't see anything amiss on their end. This is crazy making.

This morning I went in and assigned reserved IP addresses to most everything on the network. I cannot believe that will make a difference but I also don't think it will hurt anything.

If recent history holds, it should go down again about noonish.

---

Not much on the agenda for today. Swimming, of course, and a little work, but not much else.

My flight for CES does not leave until Monday but my work vacation starts today so I'm mentally one foot out the door. But, I have the whole weekend to get ready which is lovely. And, honestly, there isn't that much to get ready. I travel light and this time I'll be traveling the lightest because I want to optimize my breathing. My plans are one rolling backpack. That's it. No purse, no nothing else. And not overstuffed either cause I need to leave room for swag.

---

So today will probably be a little work, a swim, some laundry and mostly waiting for the internet to go down again. sigh.

How old is your router?

Then they should still be good, but I have seen hardware go wonky and die in a year if it happens to be a duff specimen. Any way you can borrow a router and/or modem that you know are working well and see if that makes a diff?

Over the past six months, I've had our router and then our DSL modem die. Since we replaced both, our service has been fine. So this solution is fresh in my mind!

I've had many problems with the Comcast cable modems hanging, especially the ones which support VOIP. I had no problems with the D-link cable modem I bought. If you buy your own, you have to call Comcast to have them provision it (they need to put the MAC address into their system) but that only takes 20 minutes + pre-techie hold time.

Moto surfboard is the absolute worst cable modem ever. In my humble opinion, of course. It was the first one that Comcast used down here for their rental units.

I like the D-Link DCM-202 http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=323

BTW, assigning IP addresses to MAC addresses in the router is a Very Good Idea. Make sure you set the lease time way up there, like > 7 days.

I'm hoping you have even more of a fantastic time at CES than you think you will. And may the swag be lightweight and plentiful, with a null-G tote bag swag showing up just when your backpack is getting full. ;~)

Travel safe.
