Mom and I are so lucky to have such a cadre of people on her side.

She's been stressing about her tax return for days. She says she calls the accountant and never hears back. I sent him an email on Friday and never heard back so I called this morning. Turns out her return is being handled by Yvette. And Yvette is so up to speed. There was a problem with Mom's retirement distribution and she's been dogging that puppy. She hit a problem with the investment guy (who's a turkey) and so called Torry, who handles Daddy's trust. She and Torry figured out what happened, how to fix it and put the fix in place. Yvette was one huge appology for not contacting me sooner. "I just wanted to make sure I knew exactly what was happening and going to happen before I bothered you."

And Polly. Mom wanted to do something special for Polly but didn't want to create an uncomfortable situation so she asked me to send her $500. I wrote a card explaining how she, Polly, makes it possible for me to live 3,000 miles away and know that Mom is happy. I wrapped the check up in blue tissue paper and drew a red bow on it and slipped it into the card and mailed it off. Mom said Polly landed in her room this morning so so so thrilled. Turned out she had some medical bills that she could not pay and now will be able to. I don't quite 'get' why Mom did it through me (she sent me the $500) but she's so happy that Polly's so happy.

And they all care so much about her. Conversations generally take twice as long as they should because when they say "so, how's she getting along?" They want details - they want to hear funny Mom stories. And, of course, I always have a bag of fresh ones.

It's a luxury for me to be able to have my mantra, and it's possible because of all these people who really care for Mom and take care of her. I'm so very lucky.
