BusLink is the Best
Apr. 15th, 2005 11:45 amMy harddrive that fell into a coma last night is a Buslink. I bought it probably 3 or 4 years ago. USB 2.0 was new and it came with a USB 2.0 hub. I plugged it into the computer and have used it every single day since. Until yesterday.
This morning, I googled all over everywhere for ideas on what to do. I posted a few queries and waited until 9 a.m. to call Buslink. Their number has been disconnected and the only working number on their website that wasn't sales was for RMA numbers and it was a recording. All hope flew out the window. And I started looking at repair options and then I even got the idea of just getting a new casing - I can hear the harddrive trying so I'm thinking maybe a new case....
Just to cover all bases, in the meantime, I sent an email to Buslink. I explained the problem and asked for suggestions. I actually got an email back from Ron who said I should send it in and he would fix it. If it was out of warranty he would let me know how much after he looked at it and he is not responsible for data recovery. Oh and he wanted my phone number and address.
??????
I said in my note that it had run flawlessly for 3 years. Warranty is 1 year. Get it, math boy??? So I wrote him back and said that I wasn't about to send it to him without some idea of cost and options and since I could replace the drive itself for $100, the data was really the only reason I was even considering this option.
I figured I'd never hear from him again.
Wrong. He called me. Just the nicest guy you would ever want to talk to. Really. He asked what it sounded like and I said that it sounded like it always had. He said that he suspect it just needed a new USB logic board which was a very simple fix. And a very quick fix. Probably $40. And he said he'd be very surprised if the data was compromised in anyway. It was his very geekiness and that he made an effort and that he sounded so hopeful. He is totally getting my drive. If I don't have time to get it off to him tonight, I'm getting it to Office Depot (very handy) this weekend for UPS to pick up on Monday.
