I just found a box of greeting cards - they are what's left of my stash of cards bought when I had more friends dying of AIDS than I can even now believe. I had one friend who was so ashamed that he would not allow any visitors. I tried to send him a card every week. Others were not close by and non had email. Cards were a way I could let them know they were in my thoughts. At the time, it was really hard to find nice cards without a message that conveyed sympathy for an illness but skipped the 'get well soon' part. Whenever I found one that would work and wasn't too ughgy, I bought it.

Finding the box makes me very sad. We lost some beautiful souls and I lost some wonderful friends. But, you know, it also reminds me to be so very grateful that while I have friends who are HIV positive, none have AIDS.

Indeed. I slipped in and out of the AIDS category a couple of times last summer, actually, if CD4 numbers are anything to go by, but most people on our continent are now basking in the HIV category, which is a much more peaceful and stress-free place to be.

From back in my community theatre days, two great local talents were lost to AIDS. One of them I was lucky enough to know away from the theatre too.
