When I was in grade school, I had this friend named Ann who made a casual comment to me when we were probably 8 that has pretty much guided me every day since. Really. I'm not kidding.
We were at a Friday night slumber party. She and I were talking about things we loved and I said I loved to sleep late on Saturday mornings and she said that she loved to get up early on Saturday mornings? Had I not been 8 and/or had it not been 1957, I might have said WTF??
"Saturday is the best day of the week!! I don't want to miss a minute of it!"
Had I been British, I might have said that I was gobsmacked. (We really need a word like that.) What an amazingly brilliant thought.
And if you hope that every day is the best day, why wouldn't you want to get a jump start on it? Since that day, I may have slept late a few dozen times but no more than that. I really do want to give every day a good shot at being the best day.
I have also always cringed at big X's marking days off a calendar. I'm all for anticipating an upcoming event. But, if all the days between now and then are just days to get by - days to mark off - aren't they just wasted? What if they were the best day??? Why just x them out? Why not give them a chance?
Now I find myself with days to carve out any way I want. I could actually sleep in or sleep all day. But I still worry about missing out on something while I'm sleeping. So I still get up early-ish. This morning, I woke up at 7. It's now 10 and I'm still in bed but I have paid bills, read the news, read blogs and journals, putzed around, played computer games...
I am so lucky to have all this time. My goal each day these days is to wallow in the freedom and not miss a minute of it.
