Spam

Janine, I hate to do this to you and to any others who are kind of enough to leave me comments but who would rather do it via 'anonymous', I just turned on captcha. I hate captcha and if it were between me and making a comment, I likely wouldn't leave a comment, but the spam has gotten out of control. I had 14 spam comments this morning.

I'm going to try this for a while. Hopefully, I can turn it off when the latest spamniation runs its course.

Space Kid! (http://www.spacekidcomics.com/) is getting about two dozen spam comments every day. I still haven't set up a captcha or somesuch, but the site is set that I have to approve comments before they display. So a few times a day I go in and shovel away the crap.

I feel that captcha might scare away “real” comments, but really I hardly ever get any of those as it is...

Several years back, I was stalked, and had to change my handle, and wanted to anyway to one that better suited me and who I am and when I did, I turned off anonymous posting.

While it dropped some commenters, it didn't make much of a dent at the time as there was way more commenting than there is now.

And I've never gotten the spam comments, as a result.

Oh, I have no doubt that if I turned off anonymous posting of comments the spam would be reduced to nothing or nearly nothing.

BUT then my friends who do not have accounts could not post and I'd hate to miss their fun comments.

Have you ever considered blogging on wordpress? It has some excellent anti spam filters that really do the job without Captcha! Captcha is the bane of my life, I find them so hard to read that I had to download software (skipinput.com if anyone is interested!) to enter them for me! I am dyslexic so other people probably don't find them QUITE so bad but I do notice a drop in comments when I turn the captcha on on y blog.

I have actually considered Wordpress and Blogger but neither offers the same things that Live Journal does (like the ability to make some entries available to LJ friends only - I rarely do this but sometimes)...

BUT, turns out the Captcha does not filter out spam so I turned it off after a few hours. I'm not dyslexic and I can rarely get passed a captcha myself!
