She broke her butt
May. 28th, 2005 02:56 pmWell, pelvis but butt sounds better. Polly says Mom will only be in the hospital over night. I know she'll be happy not to stay there. I have no clue how you clue a fractured pelvis - I guess since she's only going to be there overnight that it cures itself. Wonder how long that will take.
Thankgod she lives where she does. I suspect they will either move her into the nursing wing or if no room there, make sure she is taken care of in her room (which I'm sure she'd rather stay in).
Poor thing.

Date: 2005-05-28 11:00 pm (UTC)If she has osteo, they can break really easily. Ma has it, and when it was diagnosed (she cracked ribs while wheezing from the emphysema), this was the gyst of the conversation:
Dr.: Any history of osteoporosis in your family?
Ma: Oh sure, my younger sister has it.
Dr. Why didn't you ever mention that?
Ma: I figured I already had it, when I broke something I'd deal with it then
Here's hoping for a swift recovery for your Mom.

Date: 2005-05-29 12:14 pm (UTC)She just never "bounced" (poor choice of words) back from the injury. The same thing happened to my best friend's mom two years ago, and it was so painful. She, too never could get back any strength after her injury. She was the most wonderful person, and I hated seeing her like that. Her pelvis cracked during physical therapy, go figure.
Sometimes life just sucks.

Date: 2005-05-29 03:44 am (UTC)This is not exactly apropos of your mom's injury, but I recently refrained from leaving a comment on a blog, and... boy, was I glad I refrained.
'Cause one case is not like another.
In this case, the fellow's wife got thrown from a horse and suffered a spinal compression fracture (along with a hairline hip, ditto).
Some years ago, my sister fell off her roof and suffered same, less hip. She lives, after surgery, with two rods installed to keep things in line, an exercise regimen, and instructions not to fall ever again.
His wife, after several weeks, is doing so well (sans surgery) that the doctor has decided she'll be able to ice skate and ride again. (After full recovery.)
So, whatever you hear, take it with a large mountain of salt, and celebrate your mom!

Date: 2005-05-29 03:55 am (UTC)I actually Googled the situation earlier today and learned that fractured pelvis pretty much runs the gammut as far as how they fix it and recovery. (There was a lot of surgery mentioned and it doesn't sound like Mom's going that route.) So I figure I know when I know and I should concentrate on hoping that she's happy and comfortable for as long as she hangs on. And I will.
