Last night just before I went to sleep I had a wifi epiphany.  I am paying a fair amount for this beautiful room with this beautiful view in this lovely hotel.  The wifi - which is exceptional wifi - is $50 a day if we sign up all our devices.  If they had told me originally that my room rate was $350 instead the $300 I'm paying, I would not have batted an eye.

This is my one trip a year.  My one time to see my brother and have a wonderful quality bonding time with him.  My agreement with me is to spare no expense and just make it the best it can be.  So why in the hell am I being so hardass about this charge???

So we hitched on our devices and are happy as clams now.

They are making a killing though - I pay $50 a month.

I find it interesting that the pricier hotels charge for internet when the cheaper ones often include it for free. But I guess much depends on location, the clientele, etc. And they figure if you're willing to pay $300 a night you probably don't mind paying $350 to have internet. The last hotel I stayed in had free internet. It was in a small family-oriented touristy area (in other words, nothing like Vegas), and it wasn't in conjunction with a big event. It was also just $99 a night -- nice enough but not luxurious by any stretch!

One of the factors I've heard is that the bigger, business-traveler-oriented hotels tend to have much higher demands on their Internet pipe than the lower-priced, tourist-focused hotels. Business travelers are in the building all day at meetings, or in the building all evening in their rooms, and tourists tend to be out and about much more. Is it true? I dunno, but I do know the expense of providing a decent connection speed to hundreds of people at once is astronomical. Either they're charging for it separately so you can pay if you need it, or they're charging everyone for it whether they use it or not. Do I like paying separately for Internet? No, but I do appreciate having the choice.

Business hotels assume that you are on an expense account and won't care how much they gouge you for Internet access. Budget hotels know the vast majority of their customers are paying out of pocket and are going to be a lot pickier about extra costs.

My friend who goes out to the boonies for geological testing has a theory. The worse the hotel. the cheaper (In most case free) is the WIFI.

I think you were wise to decide to say "What the hell?" and splurge for the Internet access. One way I manage to avoid paying for each device separately is that I generally connect the laptop via Ethernet, and then turn on its Internet sharing feature to share the connection out via Wi-Fi to everything else. If you're in a hotel room with an Ethernet port, that's an easy solution, but of course many places these days have just Wi-Fi.

In those latter, can you pay for wifi just for the laptop, and then share that to the others?

I know exactly how you feel. I use the same logic.

I thought your phone had hot-spot services... or did you turn that off to save the $$?

I have a clearwire puck I bring with me when I travel. It's worked for me fairly well, except in places like San Diego where they don't have coverage.
