Tonight, I'm sitting here watching TV and Betty walks right by me over to the door and proceeds to poop on the rug.  WTF???  And then she goes back to the kitchen and finishes her dinner.

I googled the shit out of it once again and discovered that this - occasional pooping outside the box is not at all uncommon but I can't find a decent answer for how to stop it.  I decided to try a second litter box.   When I went to the first one to get the litter, I discovered she had pooped there, too, within the last 3 hours.

Now there is an additional litter box in the living room where she can see it.  I'll gradually move it across the room to the corner where she can get to it and I don't have to look at it and no one coming in here can see it. If this works, I'll get a nice looking cabinet for it.  I am not living with a plastic litter box in my living room but I've got to put an end to this creative pooping!!!

And I'm also keeping notes. What she eats, when and when the pooping occurs.  GRRRRRR

What a pain! She's really testing you here. I hope she gets tired of it soon.

If it's not a health problem, like constipation or arthritis making it hard for her to get in/out of the box, it could be age. Or it could be emotional -- she doesn't like to be an only cat, maybe?

Figuring out the cause is the key to making it stop, IMHO. Unless it's just old age, not much you can do there. One of my cats occasionally poops outside the box FNAR -- she's been to the vet, they're kept clean, etc. I think she's either being an old bitch or getting senile, personally.

My older (9) male cat (the only male with five females) started doing that about a year ago. I finally figured out why: if the kitty box is at all dirty, or if all six cats are in the house at night (which they are in winter). On nights when there are only two or three indoors (it's been mild here recently), he poops on the floor. A couple of nights when I was away, the box got dirtier than he would tolerate, and he peed on the floor (wood) too.

Our vet told me that for every cat you should have an extra litter box so one cat = 2 boxes, 2 cats = 3 boxes. Maybe she just wants a choice? Old cats (and old dogs) seem to let go of litter-box training and bathroom habits though...
