The city of Seattle has a shelter and that's where I got Betty and Travis and that's where the kitty I wanted was listed as up for adoption so that's where I was when their doors opened today.
It was a bit of a disaster. The kitty my friend found on the web is a senior cat 15-18 years old and in kidney failure. She's in foster care now. The had about 10 cats for adoption but it was too crowded to see them. It's really a tiny, smelly place and the volunteers aren't the easiest to work with so I left.
The county Humane Society is not nearby... It's about 20 minutes outside of town. I'd actually never been there before. It turned out to be so worth the trip. They have all the cats in little rooms of 5 or 6 cats each. Each room has a place for a human to sit and cat toys to entice the cats to play. It's clean and pretty and not at all smelly.
They had lots of cats but the only ones I clicked with had real issues. 1 was spoken for - may be available after today if she's not claimed. Then I found one I really thought was it but when I went to pay up and do the deal, they told me she was there because her owners said that in 4 years she had never learned to pee in the litter box. Er no. Then I found another one who was such a lover omg. He was just a massive ball of cuddle. But he was massive and had to have a special diet. I can't handle a special diet with Betty.
By that time I was starving so I came home. I'm not done just done for today.

Date: 2013-03-07 01:40 am (UTC)Litter box and so forth are huge issues.
In Kansas, after cats are spayed or neutered, many cats are adopted as "barn cats." Their shots are also up to date. They live outside with shelter and are really mousers with a home. It is a controversial thing.

I got Guru and Shanti at Animal Talk Rescue (at 65th and Roosevelt) and was thoroughly pleased with my experience there. I know a lot can change in five years (or even 15, but when I used Seattle Animal Control that long ago the experience was so bad that I swore I'd never use them again and I haven't; it sounds like that was the right decision) but I thought I'd mention it.
I do remember it being a bit expensive, but I felt like it was worth it for how much they did to make sure I was taking home healthy cats. So far at least, these are the healthiest pets I have ever had -- which, in the long run, has meant far fewer (and smaller) vet bills.
I seem to remember also that the place was kind of small though, so at peak business times it was pretty tight.

Date: 2013-03-07 03:54 pm (UTC)When I got Betty, I went first to Animal Voice. They were not at all nice. They gave me all kinds of shit because I already had one cat and made me feel selfish for wanting another.
But, that was in 2001 so things may well have changed. I think, however, there are enough other options that I won't chance that one again.

Admittedly I don't think I've really been fair to Seattle Animal Control. It doesn't really make sense for me to blame them now for something that happened 15 years ago, especially considering the likelihood that they have entirely different staff now.
