Or... instead of hooking the TiVos up to telephone lines, I could just use my neighbors unlocked down network. Which, as it happens, works fine, thank you. I know - some guy ended up in court for using an unsecured network... I'm not so worried.

There's two things that most people forget to mention when they've passed along the story of that dude getting arrested. As Paul Harvey would say, and now for the rest of the story...

First, he wasn't just using it to download a few bytes for his Tivo. He was soaking up a major portion of the home owner's bandwidth. And he was doing it repeatedly. In a pickup truck using a laptop parked in front of the house.

And two, he was downloading pr0n, and in some of it the participants were of questionable age.

If I had a neighbor close enough to use my wireless (remember, I live in the sticks...my closest neighbor is further away than wi-fi will work without damned good antennas) I really wouldn't mind if he used some of it. But I'd get a little pissed if he used the majority of my pipe, and I'd damned sure put a stop to it if I found out it was kiddie pr0n.

That's what I get for not reading the other comments first...

Thank you for that info. I agree that this would be an abuse. Whereas an occasional pass-by use of low bandwidth wouldn't.

What case wa that? What were the circumstances? I am not an advocate of using others' equipment all the time but when you already have paid for a connection yourself I believe there is some leeway ethically. I'm interested in what the situation was legally, in the case you mention.

Hi Susan. Your journal was mentioned by an LJ friend of my LJ friend [does that make sense?]. I snook a look, because I'm nosey like that, and saw that we are of a very similar age. You are a year and 10 months older but that's nothing when you get to our age :-) We 'more mature ladies' are hard to come by on LJ. I've friended you. I hope that is ok :-)

Especially since nobody knows you're doing it.
