Cocktail parties
Feb. 23rd, 2014 09:22 amMy parents loved throwing cocktail parties. From the time we were little until Daddy died, any excuse in the wind was the perfect excuse to throw a little party. Dress up, booze and nibbles. My Mom was a ninja de hors d'oeuvres and my Dad could mix the most complicated cocktail with his eyes closed.
For many many years, we lived in Winston-Salem, NC which back then, had no liquor by the drink. So dining in fine restaurants was sans cocktail. They would gather people at our house for a pre-dinner boozing and then traipse over to the restaurant.
The minute they left we landed on the leftovers. Most everyone finished their drinks and what was left of those was mainly melted ice but there was always a nice array of exotic munchies for us to help 'clean up.'
As I sit here finishing my after breakfast coffee, I'm looking over at my neighbors' wondering how delicious their party leftovers are. I'm guessing scrumptious.

Date: 2014-02-23 05:40 pm (UTC)When I was a kid, my dad was part of the Organ Club made of more elderly people who were introduced to them by my grandmother. These people would get together once a month at rotating houses to eat, socialize, and play music on the organ or piano. My brother and I were the only two kids there, but the older people loved hearing us play our crazy little kid songs from piano lessons. I don't really remember many faces anymore, and surely most of them have passed now, but I really enjoyed that.
It was also an opportunity to play with other people's pets since we didn't have any. That didn't hurt either.
