Major Whining
Jul. 19th, 2005 01:02 pmI'm really ready to get this redecorating thing over with. Sadly, I figure best case, it will be Labor Day and probably more like Thanksgiving.
Sheri is not the best person to have in charge of calendar. I can't tell if she thinks it's not important or does not have the skills to do it correctly or just believes everything everyone tells her and, at the same time, exaggerating information based on what she thinks I want to hear.
John, the shelf guy, told me last week that on Sunday he would be working on the first shelf section and getting it ready for priming. On Sunday, when he came, he told me he would do it on Tuesday. Just now I get a note from Sheri saying that he didn't get there today and would get there tomorrow.
Yeah, right.
At least she told me before I got home and, once again, discovered that whatever she promised would be happening that day, did not.
I'd really like to get all my keys back and have my house to my self again. But, contrary to the way Sheri sees things... there is still a whole lot to do. Yes, the place is looking great and yes, it's all wonderful and I see that. But, I also see the very long list of things not yet done and I don't see any completion date for having them done - at least not one I can count on.
I remember one of the executives I used to write speeches for at IBM. He ran a software lab and when his management team reported to him that the product delivery day had slipped again, he hit the roof. I was in his office and I swear you could see the top of his head come off. He started off with deliberate calm... "I need a date on the calendar. I need you to tell me when this will be completed." His voice grew with each word until he got to the money line which he delivered with smoke coming out his ears:
Real Soon Now is not a fucking date!!!!

Date: 2005-07-19 08:13 pm (UTC)I've been waiting all summer for a guy to come and relevel our brick walkway, but I can ignore that most of the time. Thank goodness I don't have to look at it every day, all day long.

Date: 2005-07-19 09:30 pm (UTC)And, you are right. Most anything I do now will just prolong the process. I figure I'm probably going to do this again in another 56 years and by then I'll not only know exactly how to do it right - there is no way any designer is going to fuck over a 112 year old!

Date: 2005-07-19 11:55 pm (UTC)It was a nightmare. I had almost forgotten about it until now. We learned the same lesson. Get a completion date, or start subtracting from the money.
Of course, we have not done it since.
It really has dragged on.
