Mom: If you have time today, would you please get on to my computer and fix my email? It's lost its biological order.

And speaking of logging onto another computer, I did get the credentials off my home desktop machine and gave LogMeIn (that's with a side order of white rice, [livejournal.com profile] tbone) another go and it is nice - quick. The paid version has nice, full, functionality. They give you 30 days free and then charge too much. But, they have a free version I'll try next. It's not a function I need or use often, just nice to have in the bag. VNC (which is what I use for Mom) is faster and easier once it's set up but the set up is a bitch and you do have to have software running on every machine. With LogMeIn (and GoToMyPc and the other one that I can't even remember now) you only need software on the host machine - you can get to it via any browser on any other machine. GoToMyPC is way too expensive and pretty slow. The other one has a semi-free version that is way way too slow. LogMeIn may be the best so far.

The Mariners played Toronto last night in Toronto. That field is way funky looking on TV but it sure does like hits and runs. Mariners 10, Toronto 12.

John and Robert arrive tonight. I'm going to collect them from the airport and I just remembered that I am low on gas. Hm... Note to self... I am taking tomorrow off so I can have lunch with them before they head off to Vancouver. I also have my follow up dentist appointment and my new modem is coming in from Qwest. My ISP is generally only available to help during normal business hours so I want to do the installation while they are there if I need them.

Plus, my chaise lounge is supposed to arrive today so I will need to carve out some time to give it a ride.

UPS says my eVac will be here tomorrow. Crocs say my shoe order is "pending fulfullment".

I have had two people in the last week ask me where I find my colorful scrubs. One demanded the URLs and the other asked me for a catalog next time I get one. And the one came in yesterday's mail. I'm a trend setter on the cutting edge of the next fashion sensation!

GoToMyPc has one real problem which has little to do with functionality; they run their lame adverts on XM Comedy 150 all the bloody time. It's got to the point where I change channels as soon as I recognize their blather. They also have GoToMeeting. I hate things with dumb ass names like that too. I think advertisers should be like people who turn up at your door, if you say "sorry, not interested, thank you for calling" that should be the last you every hear of them.

So, when IBM 'upgraded' all our machines one thing they added was VNC. Since I couldn't find much information on the web about it I used ZoneAlarm to cut it off from the network. Does VNC have the facility to assert control without the agreement of the local user? Can it act as a monitor without the local client being aware? In general if anyone installs anything on a machine I use I'm going to want to know exactly what it does before it gets access to the outside world. In any case I moved non-work activities like Livejournal and external email onto my Linux box which they don't have easy access to.

Because I work on networking equipment I run a packet sniffer, so I'm usually aware if anything is misbehaving in a big way. But really they can fire me if they like and I wouldn't be that upset. I dont't do anything 'bad' and I do do my work well ahead of other people, so it would be their loss. Corporate America is very easy to offend though, especially when they are downsizing and outsourcing. I'll post the Shanghai stuff in my own journal though.

John and Robert arrive tonight.

That should be fun. I'm confident you'll enjoy meeting them.

I don't know about [livejournal.com profile] unzeugmatic's ears, but I've heard it all. :^)
