And the beat goes on...
Jul. 20th, 2005 07:37 amMom: If you have time today, would you please get on to my computer and fix my email? It's lost its biological order.
tbone) another go and it is nice - quick. The paid version has nice, full, functionality. They give you 30 days free and then charge too much. But, they have a free version I'll try next. It's not a function I need or use often, just nice to have in the bag. VNC (which is what I use for Mom) is faster and easier once it's set up but the set up is a bitch and you do have to have software running on every machine. With LogMeIn (and GoToMyPc and the other one that I can't even remember now) you only need software on the host machine - you can get to it via any browser on any other machine. GoToMyPC is way too expensive and pretty slow. The other one has a semi-free version that is way way too slow. LogMeIn may be the best so far.

Date: 2005-07-20 02:57 pm (UTC)So, when IBM 'upgraded' all our machines one thing they added was VNC. Since I couldn't find much information on the web about it I used ZoneAlarm to cut it off from the network. Does VNC have the facility to assert control without the agreement of the local user? Can it act as a monitor without the local client being aware? In general if anyone installs anything on a machine I use I'm going to want to know exactly what it does before it gets access to the outside world. In any case I moved non-work activities like Livejournal and external email onto my Linux box which they don't have easy access to.
